Define what readable means for the project
A daylight review should begin with the message the audience needs to understand. A large directional arrow and a detailed timetable have different demands. List the critical text, image and symbols, expected viewing distances and available reading time. Identify who accepts the result. Without this definition, one observer may judge a screen by colour impact while another expects small technical text to remain legible from across a plaza. Keep the acceptance task specific enough that a supplier and buyer can repeat it under comparable conditions.
Choose representative observation points
Mark the intended audience locations on a plan, including the main approach and any important off-axis positions. Record height, distance and direction. Review the screen when sunlight or reflections are most challenging for its proposed orientation, as well as under ordinary conditions. A single photograph is insufficient because a camera can change exposure and conceal glare. Use photographs as supporting evidence while observers assess the actual content. Where final conditions cannot be reproduced before purchase, record the limitation and agree how destination acceptance will address it.
Prepare a realistic content test package
Include the real campaign style, smallest essential text, moving footage and any frequently used backgrounds. Avoid testing only a bright, high-contrast demo reel. Keep the files and playback settings unchanged between observations so differences have a meaningful basis. Check the content's resolution and scaling on the proposed player. If the display uses protective glazing or an enclosure, evaluate the assembled configuration rather than a bare panel. The audience sees the entire optical path, and approval should reflect the product as it will actually be installed.
Record settings and environmental conditions
Note the date, time, weather, sun direction, display orientation and selected brightness mode. Observe whether automatic adjustment, if included, produces a suitable transition between changing conditions. Check evening operation and the effect on nearby viewers or properties through the appropriate local requirements. Keep the test within the manufacturer's operating instructions. Do not confuse a successful short viewing review with an environmental reliability test. Thermal performance, ingress protection and structural installation still need their own model-specific documentation and assessment.
Close gaps before approving a larger rollout
For each failed task, record what could not be read and from which point. Consider content simplification, repositioning, reflection control or a different configuration, then repeat the relevant observation. Do not increase brightness without examining the actual cause. Ask RSXD to confirm the capabilities and settings of the quoted model and retain the agreed test package with the purchase record. A clear acceptance report describes both the successful conditions and the unresolved limits, allowing installation and content teams to make informed decisions at the next location.
A practical record to keep
Use a simple results sheet with one row per observation point and content task. Record pass, fail or review required, plus a short reason. Keep the method consistent across candidate configurations. This is more useful than assigning an unexplained visual score, because the team can identify exactly which message or viewing condition needs improvement.
Common questions
Can a photograph prove daylight readability?
It can document the scene, but camera exposure changes the appearance. Combine photographs with direct observation of agreed content from marked viewing positions.
Should the same settings be used at noon and at night?
Review both periods and confirm the available controls. Appropriate settings depend on the model, surroundings and applicable local requirements.
